There's something about the Ironman that has always seemed extreme to me. You watch footage of athletes crawling to the finish and it makes you wonder - what kind of person does it take to just keep going? What kind of strength pushes you through that sort of physical pain?
Let's be honest, at any point in the race you could quit. There's nothing and no one stopping you. You aren't swimming for your life or running from danger - it's a choice. Minute by minute, mile by mile, you are deciding that the payoff is worth the pain. And it's mostly a battle of the mind. Sure speed and training play their part, but at this distance, it's all about the will. It's ultimately a fight between your mind and the course. Some might think it's crazy, and in many ways it really is. But to me, it's also heroic and beautifully human.
How far will I be strong enough to go?
